Best Latex Mattresses 2020

Reviews and Buyer's Guide

Latex is considered one of the best materials for mattress construction due to its natural softness, breathability and resiliency. Latex is most commonly found in luxury mattresses with high price points, and may be used in both the comfort layer and support core. Natural latex may be rendered using either the Dunlop or Talalay manufacturing processes, although latex may also be made from synthetic latex foams.

Latex mattresses can be beneficial for a wide range of sleepers. Like memory foam, latex is a great choice for side sleepers because it will conform to your figure and support your body’s natural curves and contours. It also reduces motion transfer, which cuts down on nighttime disruptions for couples who share a bed. The uniformity of Talalay latex provides pain and pressure relief for sleepers with chronic back and shoulder pain, while the density and stability of Dunlop latex make it ideal for sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds.

The 100 percent natural rubber latex mattresses are the most expensive. But even though it costs a lot more than regular mattresses or synthetic latex mattresses, they offer incredible comfort. Natural latex is completely organic, and mattresses made from natural latex are a top pick among those who subscribe to an organic lifestyle. Buying a mattress is a long-term investment, and if you are trying to cut down on the synthetic or artificial substances in your life, organic latex mattress will be extremely beneficial for your health in the long run.

Latex itself offers a better ergonomic experience than most materials. Moreover, natural latex has unsurpassed elasticity, conforming to your body shape and reducing the pressure on muscles while boosting proper circulation. The comfort and gentle support offered by 100 percent natural latex cannot be found in any other types of mattress.

On the downside, because natural latex doesn’t have any synthetic substance added, the inconsistencies at the molecular level cause these mattresses to wear out more easily than synthetic latex mattresses. Although this doesn’t mean that a natural latex mattress will deteriorate quicker than normal, it does have a shorter lifespan than other synthetic varieties.

If you want the feel of natural latex but want a better lifespan and lower price, the second option should be right for you. Although called “natural” latex, it is actually a combination of 80 percent latex and 20 percent synthetic latex.

The mattress industry is flooded with this type of mattresses. If you want to buy natural and environmentally friendly mattresses that will provide good comfort and help you sleep better, while also being value for money, this kind of latex mattress is ideal.

It has all the benefits of 100 percent natural latex, such as flexibility, elasticity, comfort and luxurious feel, and also the durability of synthetic latex. If you test both 100 percent natural latex and the natural and synthetic blend, there is little difference in how the two feel.

The third option, pure latex, is the most commonly used latex blend for latex mattresses. Because it has only 20 percent natural latex, it is easier to manufacture and is also cheaper. Pure latex offers excellent support and comfort but isn’t as natural in feel as the other two types. It doesn’t have all the benefits of natural latex either. But it has great stability and durability while being a much affordable choice.

Latex Mattress FAQ

Why does Teros only sell natural latex mattresses?

We want to offer Tasmanians a better way to get a great sleep – free of the fumes from flame retardants, glues, foams and other petro-chemicals found in other mattresses. As well as environmental benefits, we believe a Natural Bedding Company latex mattress is better that inner spring because: it provides consistent support and will not pack down; has a much longer life (10-25 years) and latex will retain its shape for its lifetime.

Where does the latex come from?

Latex is derived from the tree sap in the rubber tree. The latex in our mattresses is from Sri Lanka.

Does latex have posture zones?

Yes, our latex is designed with pin-core cushioning and the mattresses have 5 posture zones.

Is natural latex flame resistant?

Yes, both natural latex and wool are naturally flame resistant and do not need to have flame retarding chemicals added to the mattress.

What process is used to manufacture the latex?

The latex in our mattresses is created using the Dunlop process. Unlike the alternative Talalay process, the latex mixture is not frozen and the density of the latex will have a small change of 2 – 3 kg over the life span (up to 25 years) of the natural latex rubber mattress.

What are the benefits of latex over innerspring mattresses?

Latex’s main selling point is that it won’t pack down for up to 25 years. In comparison, a spring mattress will pack down in about 5 – 8 years, particularly where you are heaviest, making the mattress incredibly uncomfortable and offering very little to no posture support. Most spring mattresses will contain synthetic foam. Our natural latex mattresses do not need foam as they offer enough comfort and support without such an additive.

What is the best cot mattress for my new baby?

The Natural Bedding Company offers two types of mattresses suitable for babies. Both have a Rubberised coconut fibre core (Coir) which offers great firm but springy support it allows a great amount of airflow keeping the child cool. Added to the coir is either a layer of wool or cotton. Adding a layer of wool will offer a soft comfort layer, and provides a good temperature regulator. Cotton will keep the child cool all year round but packs down much quicker than wool. Airing the mattress in the sun will rejuvenate the wool and cotton.

What is the best mattress to minimise partner disturbance?

Spring mattresses seem to be the worst for partner disturbance, by using latex for the core of the mattress you will reduce partner disturbance if not eradicate it all together. All of our latex mattress score high in reduction of partner disturbance.

How does Teros price its mattresses?

Our prices are in the middle to lower range of latex mattress production. We believe in providing you with quality products, helpful customer service and proper information. Our mattresses are hand made with love and attention to detail by a father and son team in a small NSW factory. Our mattresses don’t have quilted pillow tops, expensive coverings, foam or springs, which reduce the lifespan of a mattress.

Why do you only have ‘medium-firm’ density latex?

The latex is not as firm as you would expect and we find that by adding other things to it – such as coir or wool – we can either make it softer of firmer. We find the medium density to be the best middle ground latex. We adjust the feel of our mattresses by adding other materials to the latex mattress (such as putting coir in the middle or wrapping wool around the mattress).
